On April 11, 2025, Quei de la Corte Nova, a one-night, open-air photographic exhibition in Corte Nova in the sestiere of Castello in Venice was presented by Melissa McGill in collaboration with local residents and Massimiliano Smerghetto, who is a passionate advocate for the vitality of Venetian community life. This event marks the beginning of a year-long period of research and collaboration, which will culminate in a large-scale public work in spring 2026.
Inspired by Corte Nova’s iconic criss-crossing laundry lines and Venetian vitality, the collaborative intervention suspended photographs from the 1930s to the present day above the street — weaving a visual narrative of the neighborhood and celebrating Venetian identity in the face of over-tourism.
Photographs were contributed by local residents, La Gondola Photographic Archive (featuring work by Etta Lisa Basaldella and Mario Mazziol), the archive of Associazione 3 Agosto, Marcella Ferrari, and McGill herself.
Presented by Associazione Water Projects — the non-profit cultural association founded by McGill — the event was made possible with the support of Associazione 3 Agosto, Lega Spi CGIL Venezia c.s. e Isole, La Gondola Photographic Archive, and the students of the Andrea Barbarigo Professional Institute, who also prepared a celebratory aperitivo.
